What to know about video visits, and what you agree to before your first one.

Draft for review by counsel. Not final legal text. Items in yellow brackets still need real answers.

What telehealth is

Telehealth means getting care from an IBCLC by live video instead of in person. Your IBCLC can watch a feed or pump session, coach latch and positioning, check your pump setup, and build a written plan with you.

What video can and cannot do

  • Can: observe feeding, coach technique in real time, review your pump and supplies, and make a plan.
  • Cannot: replace a hands-on mouth exam, a weighed feed, or a physical exam by a doctor.
  • If you need in-person care, your IBCLC will tell you and help you find it.

Who provides your care

Your visit is led by an IBCLC. IBCLCs are lactation specialists. They do not diagnose or treat medical conditions, prescribe medication, or replace your doctor or your baby's pediatrician. [Counsel: confirm scope-of-practice wording, state licensure rules, and whether any visits include other licensed clinicians].

Risks and limits

  • Video or audio can drop or lower in quality. If it fails, your IBCLC may switch to phone or reschedule.
  • Information may be less complete than in an in-person visit, and your IBCLC may advise one.
  • Although we use secure technology, no electronic system is risk-free.

Not for emergencies

If you or your baby have an emergency, such as trouble breathing, signs of serious dehydration, a very high fever, or heavy bleeding, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. Do not use mothermade for emergencies.

Your location and privacy

  • You must be physically in [a state where we are licensed or permitted to provide care] during your visit. Tell us if your location changes.
  • Join from a private space. Tell your IBCLC if anyone else is in the room.
  • We do not record visits [confirm policy, and consent rules if recording is ever used]. Please do not record them either without agreement.
  • We handle your information as described in our HIPAA Notice and Privacy Policy.

Technology you need

A smartphone, tablet, or computer with a camera, microphone, and a stable internet connection, in a place where you can feed or pump comfortably.

Fees and insurance

See our Terms and our Pricing page. Coverage for telehealth varies by plan and is not guaranteed.

Your rights

  • Telehealth is voluntary. You can decline or stop at any time and ask for in-person care instead. This will not affect your right to other care.
  • You can ask questions before and during your visit.

Your consent

Before your first visit you will be asked to confirm that you:

  • understand what telehealth is and what it cannot do;
  • understand that it is not for emergencies;
  • agree to receive lactation care by video from an IBCLC; and
  • have read this consent, the Terms, the Privacy Policy, and the HIPAA Notice.

[In the product, this is a checkbox plus typed name and date, recorded with a timestamp. Counsel to confirm wording and e-signature requirements].
